Air conditioning has fundamentally changed how people experience the world. When it's hot outside, walking into an air-conditioned house is like walking into another season. Few pieces of technology have had such a striking effect on people's daily lives. Find out how air conditioners keep us cool. Credits: , HowStuffWorks |

Well its another edition of Japan Tech and this time I got a great air conditioning system for cheap. You can spend several thousand after installation and shipping. This is in regards to the split system units with a compressor outside and an air handling unit inside. I however went for the window unit with a little twist and fitted it to the sliding glass door. Almost all windows in Japan either crank open or the majority slide to the side. I almost never see the western style windows that move up and down. So the window units are all vertical. A do it yourself person can install a window unit and save money especially if you may have to move. Not hiring someone to charge and or drain the split system of freon can save money. Japan is an innovator in modern compact air conditioners and the small split systems sold in Japan are becoming more commonplace in the west as the larger bulky central air systems are expensive to buy and less efficient and very expensive to install. Both types of Japanese systems are super efficient and have loads of features depending on how much you invest. The maintenance on even the economical models is very low. Features include fully tweakable humidification, dehumidification, reverse pump heating, ionization, air cleaning and self cleaning modes. The actual design of the units make them very user friendly when it comes to popping the covers off and wiping the insides out.. Featuring: youtube.com youtube.com youtube.com I've had many people email me for technical help with their air conditioners. Walking people through the process step by step over AIM or the telephone can be a real challenge. I have no problem with giving people the knowledge to fix their own equipment. I am concerned about their safety. Telling people how to change their air filter and cleaning the condensate drain just isn't enough for most of my viewers. It's time I told people that sometimes you need a professional to do the work. |

To complete this How-To you will need: A fan Ice Linen sheets Spicy food Wristbands A bandanna A window exhaust fan Step 1: Make a half-assed air-conditioner Mimic the cooling effects of AC by putting a heaping bowl of ice in front of a fan. Hey, a half-assed air-conditioner is better than no air-conditioner. Step 2: Use linen sheets Use linen sheets, which are twice as cool as cotton, the next best choice. Tip: Leave the bed unmade in the summer. Putting a heavy spread on it will only trap heat and prevent the sheets from airing out. Step 3: Eat spicy food Eat spicy foods. They will make you sweat, which is your body's way of cooling you down. Step 4: Take warm baths or shower Take warm baths or showers, which will trigger your body to cool off. If you take a cold one, the opposite will happen, and you'll end up hotter than before you bathed. Step 5: Wear cold wet wristbands Wear wristbands that have been dunked in ice water, and tie a cold, wet bandanna around your neck. Keeping those areas chilled will cool off your entire body. This video starts with a visual montage of the sheer number of air conditioners used on our street in Cairo, Egypt, describing them as energy parasites that actually increase the heat of the surrounding air. It then shows the vacuum tube heat pipe solar absorption cooling air conditioning system installed by solar engineer Les Hamasaki at the Debs Park Audubon Environmental Center in Los Angeles. Les Hamasaki describes the 10-ton solar chiller and we conclude with a note about how solar chillers not only eliminate the need for air conditioners, but the need for entire power plants. They also produce hot water and can be used for sterilizing and desalinating contaminated water. As we say in the video, solar air conditioners "USE THE SUN'S LIGHT TO DEFEAT THE SUN'S HEAT!" Thus, the hotter it gets outside, the cooler it gets inside! |

You are invited to stay and browse through my photostream. Here's a quick index to my Flickr site:
Automobile Photographs: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)
Central Illinois (except Springfield): Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "counrtyside") photographs are grouped by county.
Springfield, Illinois: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.
The Illinois State Fair: My collection of photographs of the Illinois State Fair. The fair offers something for everyone. Grab a corn dog and lemon shake-up, and come take a look!
Beyond Central Illinois: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.
In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:
Barbers & Barber Shops: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.
Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!: Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.
